Managing Cavity with Braces

While wearing braces, you can get a cavity very quickly because it is hard to clean the teeth. It would be best if you continued to see a dentist to prevent cavity during your time with braces. However, if you still get cavities, it is good to be prepared for the treatment.

Proper Oral Hygiene

Prevention is better than cure, therefore taking care of your teeth before anything bad happens is better than taking care of them after cavity treatment. American Dental Association recommends everyone to brush the teeth using a fluoride toothpaste for at least two times a day to avoid tooth decay. It is very beneficial to brush after every meal to prevent plaque buildup that leads to decay. You should also try to floss at least once a day and use mouthwash to kill bacteria that can cause plaque.

These instructions are for those without braces. It means that if you wear braces, you have to go some extra mile to maintain your oral hygiene. You will have to carry out more frequent brushing, flossing, and controlling on what you eat. You will need to be extra careful about cleaning the braces; otherwise, food and plaque will stick around. If you don’t remove them, they will eventually erode the tooth enamel and cause tooth decay around the braces.

Cavity Treatment with Braces

Treating cavity becomes very difficult with braces, but is still possible. Decay usually happens between the cracks of teeth and around the brackets and wires of braces. If your tooth decay is in a tricky spot, then your dentist will remove your wire for proper cavity treatment to take place. In severe cases of tooth decay, your dentist may even remove the brackets if it interferes with the dental procedure.

To prevent cavities and other complications, take good care of your teeth. This way, you will never have to worry about getting a cavity with or without braces.
